5 Ways To Reduce Stress

Let's face it, Trading can be very stressful. In fact, a certain amount of stress is even normal. From the fight or flight mechanism built into us, to helping us acheive under pressure, our bodes were designed by the Creator to handle stress on a regular basis in small doses.

However, we were not designed to run in "emergency mode", 8 hours a day. Living life on the frantic edge will quickly take its toll not only on Traders, but on mere mortals as well. Left unchecked, excessive stress can result in serious physical as well as mental health problems.

Stress is not only dangerous, but expensive as well.

  • Stress is recognized as the number one "killer disease* in America today. The American Medical Association reports stress is the primary cause of more than 60 percent of all human illness and disease.

  • It is estimated American businesses lose approximately $200-$300 billion dollars because of stress each year. This is due to lost productivity and spiraling treatment costs.

You became a Trader for 2 good reasons - Time and Money.  Here are some tips to help you make the most of both while reducing stress and learning to enjoy the Good Life!

Stress Buster #1 - Learn to recognize when you are stressed.

  • Ways to overcome: Sit down close your eyes and take several long breathes letting out the air slowly, this will slow things down and allow you to center yourself.  This a fast way to re-group mentally and physically.
Stress Buster #2 - Look to reduce your daily demands, don’t over commit.
  • Ways to reduce: Set the time to complete the "to-do" list so it's realistic to complete and give yourself extra time. You will feel better on completion than not. Avoid over-committing yourself.  Get good at saying ‘No’ if it’s more than you can handle. Ask for help to lighten your load. Give yourself extra time to deal with the unexpected. Reward yourself with down time to just relax when the job is completed; a nice walk, cup of tea, read a chapter in a book.
Stress Buster #3 - Create effective time management.
  • Ways to reduce: Work on determining the proper amount of time it takes for each task.  Give yourself room should something unexpected pop up. Take a deserved break when a task is finished and feel good about what you've accomplished.
Stress Buster #4 Life has to be fun.
  • Ways to reduce: What gives you pleasure?  What makes you feel relaxed? What gives you that good feeling over and over?  Include in your day something that emits pleasure for you. Give yourself enough time to enjoy it, relish it and takes your mind off “THE To-Do LIST”. When you look forward to these times the areas that create stress are reduced.
Stress Buster #5 - Keep your thoughts positive.
  • Ways to reduce:  The easiest way to stay positive is to think the reverse of the negative thought. You may say.” But If I do that, it will not feel congruent.”  Here is where you do the “Fake it till you make it” strategy. If you do something over and over again it will eventually become real.  Another way is to ask this question if something is going wrong or doesn't feel good: “What’s great about this?”  There has to be SOMETHING in there that is good. Again the goal is to reduce stress.  The best is saying to yourself “I am just going to LET GO!” it’s not worth getting upset about.”

Coaches Corner w/ Robin Dayne | Power Of Words And Thoughts

Episode #14

By – Robin Dayne “The Trader’s Coach”

The words that you choose to make up a sentence, is the way you are programming the thoughts that are stored in your mind. Thoughts become action.

Studies have shown: “The average English speaking person only has about 2,000 words in their vocabulary. For a person with a University degree this range in vocabulary would rise to about 3,000 to 4,000.”

So what does this have to do with “trading”?

The words we are choosing to “think” as we trade become very important to what we are putting into the mind which in turn will cause a reaction.

Words > create thought (conscious or unconscious) > get stored in the mind > become reality > create an action > that can be emotional or cause a reaction or both.

So, it’s important to be very aware of what we think when we trade.

#1 - Awareness is the first part of changing

#2 – Only think thoughts and words that pull you in a forward direction

#3 – Think words that are positive

#4 – NO negative metaphors (they will intensify feelings)

#5 – Be aware of what’s causing any emotional triggers

#6 – Use repetition of good thoughts and words to reverse unwanted patterns

Exercise: Come up with 3-4 questions that are made up of “forward thinking” words that can turn around an unwanted trading pattern you currently have.

Try different ones till you find the ones you like best

Coaches Corner - Mental Blocks | Episode #11

(QQQ)(SPY)(DIA)(MDBX)(SODA)

Coaches Corner - How A Block Affects Your Trading | Episode 11

What is a Trading Block?

  1. When your conscious mind is taken over by an unconscious action

  2. Your subconscious is reacting to the trading situation

    1. Effects on your trading

      1. Entering too soon

      2. Not entering at all

      3. Emotional stoppage – brain freeze

      4. Focus on fears

      5. Exiting too soon

      6. Not being able to evaluate a bad trade

      7. Going into denial

      8. Moving stops in wrong direction

      9. Moving profit targets to unrealistic levels

      10. Becoming the dear in the headlights

      11. Physically ill- tightness in stomach muscles, feeling ill, tightness in face, headaches, agitated feelings, anxiousness and more

What traders might typically say?

“I know what to do, but can’t do it”

“I see the set up and know exactly when I should get in but I can’t seem to enter.”

“I can get in the trade ok and at the right time and then when I am supposed to exit I freeze”

“I’m frozen, paralyzed and can’t pull the trigger.”

“I watch what’s happening and know I should wait but I rush in thinking I can get a better price instead.”

“I can make money in SIM mode no problem but when I go to trade live I can’t seem to do anything right.”

“I feel like I am crazy knowing what to do and reacting in a totally different way.

How BLOCKS get installed

Blocks are installed by the same repetitive actions whether they are positive or negative. They get magnified by any experience that is similar and the effects increase over time.

A persons past beliefs about money can bring out unwanted trading reactions when your money on the line.

Just be thinking the same thought over and over can install emotionally fearful block.

Things you can do to reduce the block and its reactions?

  1. First identify you have a block – then focus on overcoming it

  2. Do the opposite whenever possible

  3. Use repetition with the opposite action to work the new behavior

  4. Get help if you can’t overcome the behavior
